Session 2: Habitat for Humanity. Village welcome!

  1. One of the quotes from the book India Unbound that sort of summed up this day for me reads "Mahatma Gandhi had said on many occasions that freedom would have no meaning unless it delivered the three fundamentals – bread, clothes, and shelter." (pg 11)

Even though we weren't there long enough to be apart of one of the homes being built, I felt that the little we helped to do would greatly contribute to the freedom received from the people we met in this village.

  2. Eleana while I agree with that, I also would say that the author mentions throughout the book that people in India do not work as a team a variety of times and in this Village and through the cooperation of Habitat for Humanity it can be clearly seen at how people are working together to improve the lives of all. While no aspect of society is perfect the creation of these homes and the installation of basic sanitation is a huge stepping stone for this country considering that a very large percentage of the population does not even have basic access to luxuries that we take for granted such as toilets. While the author is correct that three fundamentals of bread clothes and shelter are important sanitation helps prevent the spread of disease which could affect such areas.
